Education-Savings Grants & Incentives

HOME | WHAT WE DO | INVESTMENTS

When you open a RESP for a child, you may qualify not only for tax-deferred growth, but also for generous government grants, which can substantially increase the value of the savings over time. Here’s how each works:

Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG)

  • The CESG is available to all families, regardless of income
  • For each dollar you contribute to the RESP (up to $2,500 per year per child), the government adds 20% – that is up to $500 per year
  • Families with low- or middle-income may receive an additional top-up (on the first $500 contributed), boosting the grant to as much as $600 per year under certain income thresholds.
  • Over a child’s lifetime (until the end of the calendar year they turn 17), the total CESG received can reach up to $7,200
  • If you miss contributing within a year, unused CESG “grant room” carries forward, so you can “catch up” later by contributing more.

Canada Learning Bond (CLB)

  • The CLB supports children from low-income families. The grant is deposited into the RESP, and in many cases, no contribution is required at all to receive it.
  • If eligible, the child receives $500 in the first year of eligibility, then $100 for each subsequent eligible year (up to age 15), for a lifetime maximum of $2,000 per child.
  • CLB funds are an excellent way to jump-start education savings even if your family can’t make big contributions immediately.

British Columbia Training and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG) — for BC Residents

  • If you live in British Columbia and open an RESP for your child, you may qualify for a one-time grant of $1,200 under the BCTESG
  • To be eligible, the child must be a BC resident, born on or after January 1, 2006, and the BCTESG application must be submitted when the child is between their 6th and 9th birthdays
  • The grant does not require additional contributions. You receive the $1,200 simply by fulfilling the eligibility criteria and naming the child as RESP beneficiary.

Why These Grants Matter, and When to Act

Opening an RESP sooner rather than later is one of the best ways to maximize its long-term value. The earlier the account is established, the more time investment growth and government incentives have to compound, even if contributions are small at the beginning. Families do not need to make large deposits to benefit from an RESP; even modest, consistent contributions can make a meaningful impact over time.

Many parents choose to set up flexible monthly or automatic contributions, making saving easier and more predictable. This approach helps build educational funding gradually without placing financial strain on the household, and every contribution, no matter the size, moves your child closer to future opportunities.

  • Thanks to CESG, CLB, and BCTESG, starting a RESP early can multiply the value of your contributions dramatically over time.
  • For families in British Columbia, combining all grants (CESG + CLB or CESG + BCTESG) can provide a powerful boost to education savings.
  • Even small, regular contributions to RESP can trigger CESG matching, and for lower-income families, CLB provides free money with no contribution necessary.

If you’re considering a RESP or want to better understand how grants and incentives apply to your family, I’d be happy to guide you through the process.
